Appliances!

Except for the dishwasher, which is on backorder, the appliances are here. Lighting is also complete!

Check out the under-cabinet lighting! (Photos are truncated, click on them for the full view.)

Finishing Touches

We are nearing the end of our remodel for the kitchen, and it's been incredible. After we're done, we're going to relax for a couple of weeks, then start on the new walls and windows in the living room.

We are at the "finishing touches" stage of the kitchen.

All of the cabinets are now set in place.

Another view.

This is our "official" countertop. It's been ordered and should be ready next week! This photo also (kind of) shows the cabinet knobs we've selected.

CABINETS!!!!

The majority of the cabinets were installed today, thanks to the great work of Rob, Ross, and Chris.

The island cabinets are back-to-back with a gap in between for storage. A continuous countertop will go over all of it. And the floor cabinets along the fridge wall aren't set yet, due to some tile mortar that was just laid today. The center floor cabinet will actually fill the gap at the right of the wall; its current spot is for the dishwasher. (Pictures are truncated; click on them for full view.)

Progress

The tile floor is grouted and almost finished (we still have to work out some details at the threshold between the kitchen and entryway, as we have a 3" step in the concrete there). Cabinets are beginning to be installed. Enjoy!

Now that the plastic sheeting is down (which was saving the living room from dust and debris), I have a long-shot view of the new space. The notorious blue carpet in the foreground is simply a piece of scrap protecting our wood laminate floor. (Pictures are truncated, click on them for the full view.)

Look past the goofy child and you'll see the entryway cabinets, just installed!

Big Day

Today we had two major developments in our project ... our 22 kitchen cabinets arrived, and the floor was tiled. I'm so excited!

Update

The kitchen cabinets are scheduled to be delivered in 48 hours, so we had to huff a bit to make some headway this week. There's nothing like working two full-time jobs and being parents, then having to switch gears and prime/paint the ceiling and walls. However, now we're ready for the next step ... tiling.

The walls and ceiling are primed!

The SCARY Kitchen

This post gives the chronology thus far of our progress with the actual kitchen/dining area. To give a bit of background, this house was built around 1969 and had not been updated at all when we bought it. In fact, it stood vacant for over a decade before we bought it. It was built as a vacation house by a local family, and when a feud erupted, it went into disuse. We finally got it after it languished on the market for 5 years. To say we got a deal is an understatement. However, we ended up inheriting this outdated house that we're remodeling room by room. Finally, it's our turn to have a decent kitchen.

A glimpse into the fright ....

The day Rob and Ross took down the hanging cabinets over the oven. Pardon the clutter ... this is what a house looks like when cabinets are emptied and contents are strewn over every horizontal surface available.

The moment the hanging cabinets detached from the ceiling. Note the pillow, stuffed rabbit, and red padded lunch tote to cushion the fall.

An open kitchen!

A disappearing kitchen. This picture is difficult to look at. To think that we've vacuumed, spot-cleaned, and steam-cleaned this carpet to no end, and it's still disgusting. It will be disappearing soon. SOON.

This picture makes me think of the Richard Pryor movie "Moving." "We're taking it with us!!!"

Where'd it all go? TO THE TRASH!!!!!

Well ... not all to the trash. We still have to function somehow with kitchenesque abilities, so my creative husband moved the cabinets, sink, dishwasher, microwave, convection oven (and eventually refrigerator) to the porch. He even hooked up the sink with hoses connected to splitters at the outside hose spigot and the inside wash machine spigot, so I have hot and cold running water and a functioning dishwasher. The porch now feels a lot like our various college apartments (everything within six easily accessible feet), but it works for now.

Now you see the '70s ...

... now you don't!

The former exterior door is now an open doorway to the new entryway. The yellow tape on the floor shows the outline of the new cabinetry.

Note the grey pipe sticking up out of the floor on the left side of this picture. Rob and Dave trenched the concrete floor and laid in conduit so we can have a power outlet at our new island.

Who, exactly, panels the ceiling???

If only this remodel was going as fast as it takes to scroll through this post. We started ripping into the laundry room four weeks ago. All told, we're making great progress, and we're crossing our fingers that we'll have the entire process done by the end of May.

Laundry Room Picture Overload

As I'm not feeling very verbose tonight, I'll spend this post flooding you with pictures thus far of our laundry room remodel. The laundry room is 95% done ... we still have to paint around the new window and install a duct for heating and air. Otherwise, I'm just thrilled with what we have done.
